Drought Conditions Increase Risk Of Fires And Property Damages In Volusia County

FireGrass

Daytona Beach has gotten significantly less rain than is normal at this time of year. The current drought conditions mean a greater risk for wildfires. To protect yourself against property damage due to fires in Daytona Beach, follow some simple safety tips and know what to do when filing a claim.

How To Prevent Fires During Drought Conditions

According to a June 1, 2021 Daytona Beach News-Journal report, sunny weather and only a smattering of rain have created drought conditions throughout Volusia county. The drought index reached 412 on Memorial Day, more than double what it was on May 1.

While our area has received some rainfall and is expecting more in the coming weeks, it will not likely make up for overall shortfalls throughout the late spring season. The Florida Forest Service is warning residents against bonfires or other organized burns. They also advise the following safety tips to reduce overall fire risks:

  • Do not park your car or ride all-terrain vehicles on dry grass;
  • Avoid throwing cigarettes from car windows or putting them out on sidewalks;
  • Make sure spark arresters on lawnmowers are working properly;
  • Use caution when cooking out and make sure any flames or hot coals are thoroughly extinguished;
  • Limit fireworks and if you do a display, make sure a water source is nearby;
  • Pay attention to news reports regarding wildfires in nearby areas;
  • Maintain a 30-foot buffer of non-combustible material around your home;
  • Inspect chimneys and clean them at least once a year;
  • Get rid of dried leaves, cuts branches, old wood, and other objects that can easily combust;
  • Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in your garage, kitchen, and on each floor of your home;
  • Create a family safety plan in case a fire does break out.

Filing A Property Damage Claim For Fire And Smoke Damage

Even a small fire and the smoke it creates can endanger your family and cause a significant amount of damage to your home. Homeowner’s insurance policies you have in place should help offset your damages, whether it results from wildfires or other sources. Consumer Reports recommends carefully reviewing all policy documents and coverage limits in advance, to ensure you are properly protected. If you do suffer a fire or smoke damage, follow these steps in filing a claim:

  • Make a detailed list of all losses and document property damages with photos;
  • Go through your list when the insurance adjuster visits, giving them a thorough tour of your home and pointing out damaged areas that are not immediately obvious;
  • Get estimates for the costs of repairs and replacements;
  • Document all correspondence with the insurance copy and get everything in writing.
