What Is NOT Covered By Homeowner Property Damage Insurance?

InsuranceHome

Homeowner’s property damage insurance provides important protections in case of fires, storms, theft, accidents, or other unexpected events. A property damage claim in Daytona Beach allows you to replace items lost and make needed repairs. However, it is important to be aware of what is NOT typically covered by these policies.

What Does My Property Damage Insurance Cover?

The Insurance Information Institute (III) advises that there are four essential types of coverage provided by a standard homeowner’s property damage insurance policy:

  1. Coverage for the structure of your home. This protects your home and may cover repair costs for other structures on your property, such as sheds, decks, gazebos, and fencing.
  2. Coverage for personal belongings. Depending on the type of policy you purchase, this pays the value or replacement costs for personal property damaged by fire, storms, or theft.
  3. Liability coverage: This pays medical expenses and other associated costs if someone is injured on your property. It can also help with legal expenses and court judgments in the event you are sued.
  4. Additional living expenses (ALE): This pays expenses if damages to your home are so extensive that you must stay elsewhere while repairs are made.

These are all important protections detailed in the terms of your policy. However, by aware that there are circumstances that are not covered, which could impact your rights to these benefits.

What Does Property Damage Insurance NOT Cover?

When purchasing homeowner’s property damage insurance coverage, take time to read all policy-related documents. There are generally a long list of exclusions, which detail specific circumstances in which you are not protected. Be aware of the limitations of a standard homeowner’s insurance policy as well and when you might want to add additional protection. Homesite advises that the following are typically not included:

  • Damages due to flooding: Heavy rainfall, tropical storms, and hurricanes can end up causing flooding in your home. It is important to consult with flood maps to be aware of your specific risks, particularly when purchasing property damage insurance in Daytona Beach.
  • Damages due to ‘earth movements’: While earthquakes are not common in our area, sinkholes do happen on a regular basis. Damages you suffer as a result are not covered in a standard property damage policy.
  • Damages due to lack of maintenance: This is a general exclusion that could leave you paying significant amounts of money out of pocket.
  • Government actions: Losses you incur due to government actions, such as property seizure or eminent domain disputes, are not included in standard homeowner’s coverage.
