Volusia County Ranked As One of The Most Dangerous Places For Pedestrian Accidents

The number of major highways running through our area and generally heavy traffic make pedestrian accidents in Daytona Beach a major hazard. A recent study shows Volusia County is one of the most dangerous places in the country for pedestrians and a recent fatal accident emphasizes the risks residents face.

One Person Killed and Another Injured In Daytona Beach Pedestrian Accident

Two women from Georgia were recently involved in a pedestrian accident in Daytona Beach while crossing Atlantic Avenue late at night on a recent weekend. According to a March 31, 2021 report by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, it happened in the 1500 block between Wisteria and Poinsettia roads.

The women were attempting to cross the busy stretch of road at just after 1:00 a.m. Saturday when they were struck by a black 2017 Nissan Altima driven by a 21-year-old Holly Hill man. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. The driver of the Altima remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. He and the three passengers in the vehicle were listed as unharmed. Police are continuing to investigate the case and have not yet announced whether any criminal charges would be filed.

The accident comes on the heels of a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) showing that Volusia County was among the nation’s most dangerous places for pedestrians. While the number of pedestrian deaths in Florida dropped slightly in 2020, the overall number of pedestrian accidents continues to climb here and throughout the state.

Common Causes Of Pedestrian Accidents In Daytona Beach

The 2021 Smart Growth America report ‘Dangerous By Design’ confirms Florida continues to lead the nation when it comes to pedestrian accidents. Volusia County consistently ranks higher than other areas in terms of risk. While infrastructure issues, such as an abundance of high traffic areas and a lack of designated crosswalks, contribute to the problem, in the majority of cases it is the reckless actions of drivers that are to blame. Common causes of pedestrian accidents in Daytona Beach include:

  • Aggressive driving, such as improper passing of other vehicles, which can put pedestrians at risk, and failure to yield for pedestrians at crosswalks and other areas;
  • Distracted driving, such as using cell phones or texting, which is a leading cause of pedestrian accidents in general;
  • Driving under the influence, which can include alcohol, illegal drugs, or medications;
  • Running red lights and stop signs;
  • Speeding and going too fast for road, weather, or traffic conditions.
