Another Horrific Pit Bull Attack

Dog_PitBull

A Daytona Beach woman stabbed her pit bull to death to stop it from mauling herself and her husband. This is only the latest incident involving pit bulls that showcases how dangerous these dogs can be. At Bundza & Rodriguez, our Daytona Beach dog bite lawyers represent victims of these horrific attacks, so please reach out as soon as possible.

Thought they Would Die

According to the Daily Commercial, the attack happened Sunday, September 22. Fifty-four-year-old Michelle Scott stabbed her 80 pound pit bull after the dog began attacking her husband, Scott Stevens. The animal had bitten off part of Scott’s finger and could not be restrained. Mrs. Scott, fearing that the animal would go for her husband’s throat, stabbed it to death as her son called 9-1-1.

The couple had been watching the pit bull for a friend for over a year and had another dog of their own. When the two dogs began fighting over a toy in the living room, Mr. Scott intervened. This turned out to be a huge mistake.

The pit bull attacked Mr. Scott’s arm, and when his wife tried to disrupt the attack, the dog then turned on her. To stop the attack, Mrs. Scott ultimately grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the pit bull multiple times to kill it.

Recovering from Injuries

In addition to losing part of his finger (which had to be pried from the dog’s teeth), Mr. Scott suffered several puncture wounds on his arm and leg. His wife suffered puncture wounds and possibly a broken wrist.

Both were treated for their injuries. The husband has been released from the hospital while his wife, as of Wednesday, is still recovering in the hospital.

A Too Common Occurrence

Although many pit bull owners passionately defend the breed, the sad fact is that pit bulls are by far the most dangerous breed of dogs. According to one study of dog bites at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, pit bulls accounted for 51% of attacks, with Rottweilers a distant second at 9%. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control have recognized that pit bulls are a leading cause of dog bite fatalities.

Defenders of pit bulls emphasize that the owners are largely to blame for the dog’s viciousness based on how they have raised and handled the dog. And some evidence suggests that people with a violent criminal history are more likely to own a pit bull.

Nevertheless, for innocent victims, it hardly matters what is responsible for the dog’s propensity to violence. What the public needs is for pit bull owners to properly restrain their pets so that they do not attack anyone.
