Halloween Safety Tips: Ways To Protect Children Against Personal Injuries

With Halloween right around the corner, many parents are busy getting costumes ready for little ghouls and goblins. While COVID-19 has put a damper on plans, some neighborhoods will still have trick-or-treating and there are numerous other activities going on throughout the area. Along with your other preparations, it is important to take the time to consider some of the potential risks your child could face. Halloween is one of the most common nights of the year for children to suffer personal injuries. The following tips can help to keep them safe.

Make Safety A Priority This Halloween

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many communities to scale back holiday celebrations, but there are still plenty of Halloween-themed events in Volusia County. Corn mazes, haunted houses, pumpkin patches, and trunk-or-treating events can all provide an opportunity for children to collect candy and have fun with friends. At the same time, it is important to make safety a top priority.

One of the biggest concerns each year is in regards to Halloween costumes. While children love to dress up, parents can help to prevent personal injuries by following a few simple tips:

  • Avoid overly large costumes and those that drag on the ground, which create trip hazards.
  • Make sure costume accessories are not too heavy and contain no sharp objects that children could fall on or hurt others with.
  • Instead of masks, which obstruct their vision, consider using make-up instead.
  • Use quality make-up products rather than cheap kits and conduct a skin test first.
  • Incorporate glow sticks or use reflective tape on costumes, particularly for events held after dark.

Avoiding Halloween Accidents and Injuries

If you intend to send children out trick-or-treating, be aware that there are likely to be fewer houses participating this year. Those that do should follow Halloween recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in regards to social distancing, face masks, and the use of hand sanitizer.

One of the biggest concerns on October 31st is the high rate of pedestrian accidents among children. To protect them against potentially serious injuries, follow these tips:

  • Make sure that young children are accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Have older children trick-or-treat in groups.
  • Review the route they will be taking in advance.
  • Remind them to look both ways when crossing streets and to do so only at designated crosswalks or intersections.

When trick-or-treating, instruct children to only go to homes that have a light on and to never enter anyone’s residence. While having a cellphone on them can help in the event of an emergency, warn them against using it while walking and remind them not to eat any candy collected until after they get home.
