The Big One: Outside Of Races, Multi-Vehicle Car Accidents In Daytona Can Have Tragic Consequences For Drivers

CarCrash2

It is not uncommon to hear about multi-vehicle car crashes during the Daytona Beach 500. In fact, waiting for The Big One and guessing at what point it will happen is among the many rituals motorsport fans engage in at races. While racecars are designed to allow professional drivers to recover quickly when they occur, regular motorists are not nearly as lucky. Multi-vehicle car accidents in Daytona Beach often leave all of those involved suffering serious and potentially life-threatening personal injuries.

Multi-Vehicle Car Accident In Daytona Beach Claims Life Of Driver

A recent multi-vehicle car accident in Daytona Beach claimed the life of one of the drivers involved. According to a February 12, 2021 news report by Click Orlando, it happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. on a Thursday afternoon, on International Speedway Boulevard.

Law enforcement officials state that a 57-year-old Port Orange woman driving a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck failed to respond in time for stopped traffic near South Clyde Morris Boulevard. She ended up crashing into the back of a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, driven by a 29-year-old Daytona Beach man.

In attempting to avoid the accident, the Port Royal woman also sideswiped a green 2005 Ford Five Hundred traveling in an opposing lane. As a result of the damage caused by both collisions, she became trapped in the vehicle. Officers who arrived on the scene were able to extricate her from the wreckage and rushed her to the nearby Halifax Health Medical Center. Unfortunately, she died shortly after her arrival. Police state that the other drivers impacted suffered seemingly minor harm.

When ‘The Big One’ Happens Outside Of Races

The Big One is a term that was coined during the 2001 Daytona 500 by a newscaster in describing a major multi-vehicle pileup on the track. It has been used ever since to describe these types of crashes, which are common at races. Unfortunately, they are also common on local roads and highways and often leave both drivers and passengers involved with serious personal injuries.

When this type of crash happened at a race, mechanics swoop in to repair damages and the drivers are generally unharmed. Regular motorists are not so fortunate. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), multi-car accidents are one of the leading causes of traffic deaths.  Unexpected traffic tie-ups, adverse weather conditions, and dangerous driving behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, or driving distracted can all make multi-vehicle car crashes more likely to happen. In these cases, there may be multiple drivers who are responsible. This can make seeking compensation for your injuries more challenging, which is why you need an experienced Daytona Beach car accident attorney on your side.
